CRICKET ON THIS DAY: Irfan Pathan hat-trick vs Pakistan off the first over of the test

On this day in 2006, Irfan Pathan became the second Indian player after Harbhajan Singh to take a hat-trick in test cricket when he dismissed Salman Butt, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf in the very first over of the test match at Karachi. Pathan is also the only bowler to pick up a hat-trick in the first over of a Test match.

India captain Rahul Dravid won the toss and elected to bat first. In the fourth ball of the first over, Pathan pitched the ball in the middle-and-leg area that swung away from the left-handed Butt, who manages to edge the ball to Rahul Dravid at first slip. In the next ball Younis Khan was trapped lbw. In the last ball of the over, Pathan bowled Mohammad Yousuf with an inswinger to complete the hat-trick.
