CRICKET ON THIS DAY: VIDEO: VVS Laxman scripts a 1 wicket victory against Australia in Mohali test

On October 5, 2010, India beat Australia by 1 wicket in a tense finish at the first test in Mohali.

Australia won the toss, batted first and amassed 428 on the back of hundred by Shane Watson (126) and half centuries by Ricky Ponting (71) and Time Paine (92). India replied with half centuries from Virender Sehwag (59), Rahul Dravid (77), Sachin Tendulkar (98) and Suresh Raina (86) and finished only slightly behind Australia scoring 405.

Australia got all out for 192 in the second innings with only Shane Watson (56) crossing 50. India's reply was stalled by Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger who ran through the top order as India got reduced to 124/8.

VVS Laxman, struggling with a back spasm, had batted at No. 10 in the first innings, and had come in at No. 7 with a runner in the second. He joined hands with Ishant Sharma for a match winning ninth wicket partnership of 81 runs. Interestingly, during that 81-run stand, Ishant played 71% of the total deliveries (92 out of 130).

When Ben Hilfenhaus trapped Ishant Sharma (31), India still needed 11 runs to win the test and Pragyan Ojha joined Laxman. Laxman then aimed for taking twos and on one occasion, there was a confusion between Raina and Ojha. It nearly resulted in a run-out as Laxman was furious at Ojha, hurling a few words. With two runs required, Johnson ran in and strayed on to Ojha’s pads. It hit his body and trickled to fine-leg as Raina and Ojha sprinted across to complete two. Laxman finished with a fine 79 ball 73.

Zaheer Khan was declared Man of the match for his 5/94 and 3/43.
